The two books here showed include the results of the Atelier of Urban Design The eccedent space. Explorations in the south of Turin. The outcomes are ten territorial sections of six kilometers, ten investigations on specific issues related to selected places crossed by the sections, ten projects aimed to experiment different ways of living within the same city.
The Atelier was led by Angelo Sampieri (Urbanistica) and Silvia Crivello (Sociologia dell’ambiente), with the collaboration of Federico Guiati, Leonardo Ramondetti and Quirino Spinelli (CDL Magistrale in Architettura per il Progetto Sostenibile, Politecnico di Torino A.A. 2014-2015).

Turin shows an essential feature of the urban shrinking related to the crisis that runs through the western world. For several years, project cultures attempting to face this contraction, dealt with recycling, re-naturalization and abandonment: sustainable actions that tried to treat the eccedent space. The Course propose two distinct approaches related to the transformations of public space and residence in a time when they are both subject to restriction (of resources, density, activities, functions and space).

In a large part of Piedmont Region, the agricultural landscape is grounded on a social overhead capital, stratified over time ago. It was a minor infrastructural capital, constructed “from the water.” Today the incessant flooding is the symbol of the increasing weakness of the complex connections between landscape, water, soil and populations.
